LIS | Lisbon Portela Airport

Duty Free shopping on arrival is not available at Lisbon airport, a major hub for passengers coming from Brazil. TAP Portugal is the major airline who operate these routes, they sell inflight duty free on board. Portela airport does have some arrivals stores where you can buy goods in the baggage claim area, but these shops are all tax and duty paid shopping conditions, because for EU Member States, Duty Free and Tax-Free sales are not permitted for arriving or intra-EU country travellers.

For your departing journey from Portugal to a destination outside European Union borders, such as returning to Brazil, you will be able to shop Duty Free at the lowest prices, there are no EU rules or restrictions.

Some airport retailers advertise their goods as Tax Free, but for intra-EU travel or for those shopping on arrival, this means that the prices are special promotional or discounted offers. In fact, tax is included on such goods. The only tax free goods available in domestic shops throughout the EU, are those offered under the VAT/IVA Sales Tax-Refund shopping scheme.

Local Taxes in Portugal on products such as tobaccos, cigarettes, cigars or alcohol are quite low, this means that even though you might be paying tax on your goods in the airport stores, the prices are still competitive. Much will depend on where you live or are arriving from and the relevant currency exchange rate as to whether you can find a Duty Free bargain.

The best way to find out is to compare prices, below we include an airport store link, so you can review all the products available. For your departure or other destinations, just enter your details in the box above and hit 'go' for relevant details.

This airport permits for outbound returning passengers, the purchase and subsequent collection of 'duty free' goods in the arrivals baggage hall. The service, known as 'shop n collect', gives the traveller more flexibility as it avoids carrying the goods whilst travelling. It also avoids the need to carry liquids inflight and thus avoid potential security problems. International passengers arriving at this airport will still have the facility to buy at the duty free arrivals stores (if permitted), even though 'shop n collect' may not yet available for online pre-order purchases. For travel within the EU, the sale of liquors and tobaccos may be restricted.

European Union member states also operate a tax-free shopping scheme where visitors to these countries can obtain a sales tax refund on the goods they purchase during their visit. Foreign visitors who are not resident of The EU and are returning to a non EU country have the facility to use the Tax-Rebate retail scheme where the local EU sales tax, otherwise known as VAT/TVA, is refunded to you when you depart from Europe.

The refund booths can be found in most major EU airports and more details are available in our tax free and downtown shopping section, under land travel searches.

Some airline and airport retailers are yet to publish their online duty free prices and catalogues, others have now started incorporating online pre-order facilities.
