Duty Free shopping was invented at Shannon airport in Ireland when trans-atlantic flights stopped to re-fuel there, Aer Rianta is an Irish Company who originally developed this new business. Their International Division, (ARI) created and operated the shops, originally in Ireland, but then further afield.

Today, the Firm have their own stores around the world, with a particular strength in the Middle East and Canada. They often use the brand name 'Runway Duty Free' for these shops, such as those found in Canadian airports. ARI tend to specialise in airport shopping and their other global locations include Russia, The Ukraine, India and now China.

Some former managers of ARI moved on to other locations to help establish the new duty-free market around the world and places such as Dubai, Oman and Moscow all had, or still have, Irish management in place, helping to develop the business. Today, duty-free and tax-free shopping spans the globe and it was from this small airport retail outlet in the west of Ireland that this global business evolved into a giant.
