China Duty Free Group CDF

China Duty Free Group is a Chinese State Enterprise business with the responsibility for retail in travel locations such as ports, border stores and airports, they also provide onboard services for airlines. A new initiative is the development of a luxury brand retail business on the island of Hainan, a major tourist resort for the Chinese. The State has introduced rules which are the exception in the world of tax-free shopping, by allowing Chinese citizens to have a duty-free allowance on this island, even though it is part of China. In effect, Chinese tourists do not have to go abroad to take advantage of duty free shopping, they can buy tax-free on this island.

CDF operate most of the duty-free stores in airports, although other independent firms also have the right to trade in China as is the case at the airports in Shanghai. There are numerous border crossing stores into neighbouring countries and many port stores that cater for ferry travellers. The cruise market is also growing and CDF are already planning for this new market.

Hong Kong and Macau are regarded as separate entities where the duty free business was developed by international companies many years ago and CDF do not have any facilities in these special territories.
